From 103 Cigars to One Champion
Our 2026 evaluation began with 103 cigars: 71 cigars in the Evaluation Pool and 32 cigars selected for the Official Field.
Those 32 cigars entered a head-to-head tournament. Each round became more demanding as the field moved from 32 cigars to the Final 16, Grand 8, Final 4, championship matchup, and ultimately one winner.
The purpose of this structure was simple: every cigar had to advance by performing against another serious contender.
More Than Reputation
A famous manufacturer can produce an excellent cigar, but reputation alone should not determine the winner. Price, rarity, advertising, and brand recognition can influence expectations before a cigar is ever lit.
Our process focuses on the cigar itself. Construction, draw, burn, aroma, flavor, balance, complexity, and overall experience all matter. A cigar must deliver from beginning to end.
That creates room for established icons, newer releases, and unexpected contenders to compete on the same field.
The 2026 Cigar of the Year
After advancing through the complete tournament, the Padrón 60th Anniversary Perfecto earned the title of 2026 Cigar of the Year.
The Arturo Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share finished as the runner-up after an outstanding tournament performance.

Why a Tournament Matters
A ranked list tells readers where each cigar finished. A tournament also shows how the result was reached.
Cigar smokers can follow the matchups, review the advancing cigars, study the field, and understand the path to the championship. That transparency makes the final result more meaningful.
It also creates something the cigar industry needs: an ongoing conversation about how cigars compare when evaluated side by side.
The Search Never Stops
Winning Cigar of the Year does not mean the search is finished. New cigars are released, established blends evolve, and overlooked cigars continue to earn attention.
Our work continues throughout the year as we examine manufacturers, individual brands, value cigars, historical standouts, and the cigars that smokers actually purchase and enjoy.
