Instead of a traditional list, the 2026 Cigar of the Year competition placed 32 cigars into a head-to-head tournament. See what the official results revealed.
Every year, cigar publications release lists naming their highest-rated cigars. CigarOfTheYear.com approached the question differently.
Instead of judging each cigar once and arranging the results into a traditional list, the 2026 Cigar of the Year competition placed the strongest contenders into a head-to-head tournament. Every cigar had to continue performing as the competition became more demanding.
A total of 103 cigars were reviewed, with 32 selected for the official tournament field. Those cigars were divided into eight groups before advancing through the Top 16, Grand 8, Final Smokeout, and Championship.
When the final matchup was complete, the Padrón 60th Anniversary Perfecto stood alone as the official 2026 Cigar of the Year.
Why Use a Tournament?
A cigar can perform exceptionally during one smoking session. A championship format asks a more difficult question:
Can it continue delivering when compared directly against other exceptional cigars?
The tournament format allowed every contender to be examined across multiple stages. Construction, draw, burn performance, flavor, balance, consistency, and overall enjoyment were evaluated through the Ashology™ process.
Brand reputation could not advance a cigar. Packaging could not win a matchup. Every contender had to prove itself through the experience it delivered.
From 100 Cigars to the Final 32
The tournament did not begin with only 32 cigars. The initial evaluation pool included 100 candidates representing established manufacturers, respected classics, modern releases, boutique producers, and limited editions.
Only 32 were selected for the official field.
Those cigars were divided into eight groups of four. Each cigar competed within its group, and the two strongest performers advanced to the Top 16.
From there, the competition became single elimination:
- Top 16: 16 cigars competing for eight positions
- Grand 8: Eight quarterfinalists competing for the Final Smokeout
- Final Smokeout: Four semifinalists competing for the Championship
- Championship: Two finalists competing for Cigar of the Year
The structure created a complete journey from a broad evaluation pool to one champion.
The 2026 Cigar of the Year Champion
No. 1: Padrón 60th Anniversary Perfecto
The Padrón 60th Anniversary Perfecto earned the 2026 championship after advancing through every stage of the tournament.
It entered the competition in Group A, completed the group stage with a 3-0 record, survived the Top 16, advanced through the Grand 8, and won its Final Smokeout matchup.
In the Championship, the Padrón 60th Anniversary Perfecto faced the Fuente Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share and earned a final Ashology™ score of 30.0 out of 30.
Its victory was not determined by a single reputation-based ranking. It was earned through repeated performance and direct competition.

The Championship Finalist
No. 2: Fuente Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share
The Fuente Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share finished as the official runner-up after an exceptional tournament run.
Representing Arturo Fuente, the Angel’s Share advanced from Group G, survived each elimination round, defeated the Liga Privada T52 in the Final Smokeout, and earned its position in the Grand Final.
Its final score of 29.5 out of 30 demonstrated how closely contested the championship truly was.
Finishing second in a field of this quality is not a consolation. The Fuente Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share proved itself to be one of the finest-performing cigars evaluated during the 2026 competition.
The Third-Place Match
No. 3: Liga Privada T52
The Liga Privada T52 by Drew Estate defeated the E.P. Carrillo Encore Majestic in the tournament’s separate third-place matchup.
The T52 entered the competition through Group C and advanced all the way to the Final Smokeout. Its strength throughout the tournament also earned it recognition as the 2026 Master Ashologist’s Choice.
Its third-place finish confirmed that the Liga Privada T52 was not simply a strong group-stage performer. It remained competitive through the most demanding rounds of the tournament.
The Final Smokeout Finalist
No. 4: E.P. Carrillo Encore Majestic
The E.P. Carrillo Encore Majestic completed the official top four.
After advancing from Group E, it survived the Top 16 and defeated the Davidoff Millennium during the Grand 8. Its tournament run ended against the eventual champion, the Padrón 60th Anniversary Perfecto, in the Final Smokeout.
Reaching the final four established the Encore Majestic as one of the most successful cigars in the 2026 field.
The Grand 8 Honorees
Four additional cigars reached the Grand 8 and are recognized equally as official Grand 8 Honorees:
- Davidoff Millennium
- Davidoff Year of the Horse Limited Edition 2026
- My Father Cigars Blue Label
- Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado
Each of these cigars advanced from its group, survived the Top 16, and earned a place among the final eight contenders.
Rather than forcing arbitrary rankings from fifth through eighth, CigarOfTheYear.com recognizes all four equally for reaching the Grand 8 stage.

What the 2026 Tournament Revealed
Several important lessons emerged from the competition.
Consistency Becomes More Important With Every Round
One excellent performance can attract attention. Repeated excellence wins a tournament.
As the competition progressed, each cigar was required to continue delivering reliable construction, balanced flavor, and an enjoyable overall experience.
Different Cigar Styles Can Compete at the Highest Level
The Official Top 8 included cigars from Padrón, Arturo Fuente, Drew Estate, E.P. Carrillo, Davidoff, My Father Cigars, and Oliva.
These manufacturers represent different blending styles, strength levels, production philosophies, and smoking experiences. There was no single formula for advancing.
Reputation Alone Does Not Guarantee Victory
Several celebrated cigars entered the tournament, but every contender still had to earn advancement.
A respected name may create expectations. Once the cigar is lit, however, performance must support those expectations.
Direct Matchups Create Meaningful Context
A numerical score can explain how well a cigar performed. A head-to-head matchup shows how that performance compares against another leading contender under the same competitive structure.
That context is what separates the Cigar of the Year tournament from a conventional annual list.
More Than a Ranking
The 2026 competition was designed to document the complete journey from selection to championship.
Visitors can explore the original 32-cigar field, review every group, follow each elimination round, and read the individual matchup recaps. The final result is supported by the entire tournament—not only by a single announcement.
The Padrón 60th Anniversary Perfecto is the official champion, but every cigar that reached the Grand 8 earned a meaningful place in the story of the 2026 competition.

Recommend a cigar for the 2027 competition
The next champion will not be selected because it is the most expensive, the most heavily promoted, or the most recognizable.
It will have to prove itself.
